Planning relaxation helps retail property

A reduction in planning red tape to allow more empty buildings to be used as temporary commercial premises is good news for businesses looking for new premises, according to Knight Morris, property management experts.

Peter Knight, director of Manchester-based commercial property managers Knight Morris – property managers, said: “Identifying new premises can be a lengthy process and often the facilities available do not match the business’s requirements or are unaffordable. By relaxing planning laws so that businesses can move quickly into premises without needing to apply for change of use permission will certainly speed up the process and will provide firms with a wider choice of properties.

Last summer, the Government announced that it could scrap bureaucratic hurdles to enable empty buildings to be transformed into new shops, business start-ups and community projects.

Empty properties can blight towns and cities and attract anti-social behaviour. Many of these  premises are in prime-locations for business purposes such as a redundant building in the high street or a warehouse close to a major motorway network and it would make far more economical sense for them to be used by those businesses seeking a quick solution to their premises needs and those which don’t want to jump through planning hoops to get it.

The Government has now indicated it could scrap the planning rules in order to temporarily change the use of empty buildings to reinvigorate towns and cities and to encourage economic growth.

How a Commercial Property Manager can help you

Peter continued: “As commercial property managers, we offer a multitude of services to make commercial property management easier for businesses. This includes sourcing new premises, conducting the necessary acquisition surveys to ensure the value of rent is acceptable. We determine whether modernisation is required – and can handle disposal of your old site.

Appointing a commercial property management company will lessen the burden on the owners, freeing up their time to concentrate on other aspects of the business. It can also save businesses a substantial amount of money by sourcing the right property at the right cost.”
